.: Guinness World Record Attempt: Longest DJ (Club) Session in History
date: April 2006
contributor:
Andre Cato

IN JUNE of this year, Melbourne’s Federation Square will host a bid to set a new Guinness World Record for the longest DJ (club) session in history – a record that currently stands at 84 hours live, continuous mixing. Attempting to smash this and set a new record of 100 hours will be DJ Promo, a British-born DJ who’s made Australia his adopted home.

Two things make his attempt exceptional: first, although drugs testing is not mandatory under existing rules, DJ Promo has insisted on being tested to prove no illegal stimulants have been used; and second, all profits are being donated directly to two Australian charities.

The event – which will take place in a state-of-the-art, purpose-built nightclub entirely open to the public – is being staged to promote clean, healthy living and demonstrate that fun can be had without the use of drugs or alcohol.

The chosen beneficiaries, both of which exist to support marginalised groups, are The Big Issue, which helps the homeless and long-term unemployed take steps towards self-reliance; and Challenge, a major provider of support services for children living with cancer and life-threatening blood disorders.

DJ Promo (real name Matthew Solo) said: “This is the biggest thing I have ever done. DJing for 100 hours is something I’m very confident I can do and I’m delighted to be raising money for two amazing charities at the same time.”

To achieve his target, 35-year-old DJ Promo will spend more than four days on his feet at the decks, without sleep, playing around 1,500 records back-to-back. His set will incorporate all genres of house music, from jazzy vocal to tribal progressive, plus a selection of his own tracks.
